Enjoy the stunning scenery this Autumn as we GoWightAway to Stratford and the Cotswolds. What better time to explore as the Autumn hues paint the countryside with a golden tint; sit back, relax and enjoy!
Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Possibly the most famous writer in the English language, Shakespeare is known for his sonnets and plays such as ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Hamlet’. The Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon. With time to explore, we have included a River Cruise on the Avon with Cream Tea on-board, with commentary along the way.
The Ettington Chase Hotel, your accommodation for your stay, is set in 11 acres of landscaped grounds, only 6 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon. The hotel itself boasts a large swimming pool, sauna and fully equipped state of the art gym. The stylish bedrooms feature modern oak furniture, flat screen TV’s and free WiFi. The Tempus Bar and Restaurant features seasonal menus and room service is also available. Stratford-upon-Avon, just 10 minutes drive away, offers an exciting Shakespeare experience, including Anne Hathaway’s cottage and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
We make the most of the journey to the hotel, stopping in Woodstock for a few hours on the way. The town is a collection of easy-to-explore historic, honey-coloured streets as lovely as any found in the Cotswolds. Wander in and out of interesting boutiques, unique art galleries and antique shops. The Oxfordshire Museum in the heart of town tells the story of the ancient county, it’s natural history, Roman developments and archaeological sites. When you’re ready for a lunch, enjoy eclectic food choices in one of the many tearooms, coffee shops, or pubs.
We have arranged a full day out to Upton House & Gardens, fully escorted with a Welcome Host to look after you throughout. See how Lord & Lady Bearsted made Upton House and Gardens the perfect country retreat for their family in the 1930s. You can also discover Lord Bearsted’s famous art collection including works by Bosch, Stubbs and Canaletto. Every ideal home needs a spectacular garden. Lady Bearsted’s passion for plants is revealed with bulbs, herbaceous planting and kitchen garden – all reflected in the Mirror Pool.
Arrive to a welcome hot drink and shortbread. Enjoy a private guided tour of Upton House followed by a two course hot lunch in Iris’s Tearoom, for our exclusive use. A warming Autumn Casserole with a hunk of crusty bread followed by a choice of National Trust baked-on-the-premises cakes is included. There will be time to wander the gardens and even to re-visit the house on a ‘free flow’ basis at your own pace in the afternoon. There will also be time to visit the ever-popular National Trust shop.
