There is a full day out to Castletown, the Southern Heritage Trail and Peel. We travel via the famous ‘Fairy’ Bridge to Castletown, the Island’s historic capital and home to Castle Rushen, one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe. After spending time in this pretty harbour town, we continue onto Cregneash & the National Folk Museum which illustrates life in a typical 19th century Manx community. After we visit the towns of Port Erin & Port St Mary, enjoying a stop at the Sound with stunning views of the Calf of Man. We end the day at Peel to visit Peel Castle, one of the Isle of Man’s principal historic monuments, the House of Manannan and explore the Celtic, Viking and Maritime traditions of the Isle, making sure you purchase some Manx kippers.
There are free days to explore Douglas and the Manx Museum. The capital of the Isle of Man, Douglas is a unique blend of holiday resort, finance centre and working harbour. Stroll along the beach or take a journey on one of the heritage railways, the Manx Museum situated in the town centre is also well worth a visit. We have included a one day Explorer Pass, giving unlimited travel for the day on all trains, buses and the horse drawn trams – great for getting out and exploring!
Our last day is Ramsey and the Laxey Wheel. In the morning visit Ramsey, set on the coast with a magnificent backdrop of the North Barrule peak. There’s an attractive working harbour spanned by a Victorian Swing Bridge and open expanses of sand-shingle beach to the North and South. Ramsey also has the Mooragh Park, the ‘jewel’ of the town.
Travel along the coast via the pretty village of Laxey, home of the world’s largest water wheel. Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex. Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley.
We travel back in a day with a late return.
